Today's Plan
- To demonstrate the elements and approaches found in the JBI systematic review process
- To outline the parallels between the systematic review process and the thesis process
Purpose
- Literature Review
- Provides a context or justification for the researcher's own work
- Renders a conclusion based on the examination of a variety of different, but related, studies
- May not be replicable
- Systematic Review
- Informs practice, policy, and future research
- Provides evidence on what works, where it works, when it works, and for whom it works
- Is organized, transparent, rigorous, replicable, neutral
Characteristics
- Literature Review
- Begins with a topic
- Includes bibliographic search results deemed by the reviewer to be sufficiently related to the topic
- May lack an initial research question, rigour, and neutrality
- Systematic Review
- Requires a research question
- Uses data extraction tools to appraise and synthesize evidence (quantitative or qualitative, narrative / opinion)
- Process rather than a specific method
The Protocol
- SRs begin with a published, peer reviewed protocol -- often months (or years) in advance of the actual review
- Research question(s)
- Explicit search strategy
- Inclusion / exclusion criteria for acceptable review material
- Appraisal strategy
- Data collection and synthesis methodology
