About the New Brunswick Magazine | Table of Contents |
July 1898 was marked by the first issue of the New Brunswick Magazine, published and printed in Saint John, New Brunswick. Its "special field" of interest was the history of the Maritime Provinces, intending that the word history be used in the broadest and most general sense, covering such subjects as geography, ethnology, bibliography, and current literature. It dealt, the reader was assured, with "facts, not fancies".
The first publisher, W.K. Reynolds, stayed with the magazine through the July 1899 issue, when the press of his job obliged him to step down. In August 1899, the former printer of the magazine, John A. Bowes, took on the task of publishing it as well.
After the December 1899 issue, publication was suspended, "until such time as it could be taken up and published regularly". That time turned out to be several years, and the publication was not re-established until September 1904. On its re-establishment, the character of the magazine was altered, and many of the articles revolved not around history but around contemporary politics in the city of Saint John.
The Ward Chipman Library holds a number of issues of the New Brunswick Magazine which are in somewhat fragile condition. The purpose of this list is to assist students and faculty in determining which issue or issues they may require for research without the necessity of handling every issue. It is a limited list in that it covers only those issues held by WCL. The New Brunswick Magazine has been indexed in conjunction with other early New Brunswick periodical literature in other works, notably in the New Brunswick History Checklist. However, to our knowledge, the Checklist is not available via the internet.
