Access | Interpreting the Number | Publications by Catalogue Number |
Access to StatsCan publications can be achieved in a number of ways. Many paper items are received by selective depository or depository libraries such as the Ward Chipman Library (UNBSJ) and the Harriet Irving Library (UNBF). StatsCan also publishes a number of items electronically, some of which are only available as electronic items and may never be published in paper format. Many of these publications are electronically available on the internet and may be accessed for free but access to others, which are electronically available, must be purchased or licensed.
UNB and UNBSJ users are urged to check with the appropriate library before purchasing any StatsCan publication as the University may already be providing access to that item.
Users may wish to consult Statistics Canada Publications by Catalogue Number for links to publications available by depository agreement to on-campus users as well as StatsCan items freely available to any internet user, regardless of affiliation or location.
Please note:other Canadian government statistical materials including Canadian Statistical Resources are available.
Many researchers use the assigned Statistics Canada catalogue number to identify needed materials. The assigned number offers a variety of clues about the subject matter of the item.
For instance, the first digit in the assigned number indicates a major sub-group, as follows:
The second digit indicates a subject sub-group:
The third digit indicates the frequency of the item's publication:
The fourth and fifth digits are issued sequentially to each item in each subgroup to ensure that each item has a unique number.
Items with letters following the first two digits mean that, technically, those items are not publications and fall in the Product Class category. A letter in the third position indicates the following:
Letters in the sixth position are variable descriptors and may tell you something about the status of an item. They may be interpreted as follows:
Letters in the eighth position refer to the language of the item:
Thus, if you have the catalogue number 11-534-RIE, you would know the item to which it refers is a general item with a business conditions sub-group; it is a revision (R), is published on the internet (I) and is in English (E). Catalogue number 21F0008XIB tells you that the item deals with a primary industry with prices and consumer expenditures as a sub-group; it is a fixed product (F) with the unique number of 0008; it has no applicable variable descriptor (X), appears on the internet (I), and is bilingual (B)
