Introduction

Deselecting material from the Library's shelves should be at least as thoughtful a process as choosing new items for purchase. It will have an impact on users, and the usefulness of the collection, in the years to come.

Deselection should never be occur solely based on the age of the item, space considerations, or lack of use in the immediate past -- though each of these criteria may play some small role in the final decision on an individual item.

Goals

1) To remove items which are outdated and therefore, no longer wholly accurate in terms of procedures, treatment options, standards or principles, or which may now be considered dangerous or unethical.

2) To provide supplemental (beyond undergraduate textbook level) materials appropriate to the current and future curriculum and research interests of the UNB community of users.

3) To provide higher visibility to those items which support the current and future curriculum and research interests of the UNB community of users.

4) To provide information to both faculty and librarians on the deficiencies in the collection, thus allowing additional appropriate purchasing of core and additional materials.

Other Considerations

If the item is worn, battered, or highlighted, should it be:

permanently deselected?

replaced?

If the item is a previous edition and the later edition is present, should it be:

permanently deselected?

kept for historic purposes (eg it is a classic in the field or it illustrates important changes which have occurred over the years)?
